Want To Change Your State?

Want To Change Your State?

Something that I have become fascinated by in the last few years is how we can change our state.

Specifically - how we can move out of low mood, anxiety, procrastination or apathy and feeling more energised, focused and joyful.

So much of what I do as a coach is supporting people to shift their state.

Today, I just wanted to share 6 simple ways proven to change your state (out of the plethora I have been gathering).

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Movement: Whether it be running, dancing, walking, swimming or yoga,  movement is an excellent way to change your state. Exercise promotes the releases of endorphins - feel-good neurochemicals that induce feelings of pleasure, they can also act as pain inhibitors. Movement has also shown to reduce stress and anxiety.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Breathwork: or deep breathing (especially a long exhale) is one of the quickest ways to move you from a stress response to a place of calm. Deep breathing helps us shift into the parasympathetic nervous system (from flight or flight to rest and digest) making us feel more relaxed.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌMusic: Ever felt a bit flat, then put on some good music and noticed your mood change? Brain scans and psychological research show music can improve mental health and reduce stress.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Nature: In Japan, time is nature is prescribed by doctors for mental wellbeing - it's called Forest Bathing (shinrin-yoku). Being in nature can reduce anger, stress and fear and can bring greater emotional wellbeing.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Posture: Your posture impacts your mood and your state of being. Research has shown that having a stooped posture can increase feelings of negativity. Straighten up to change your mood.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Connection: Feeling connected is key to our state of wellbeing. Connection reduces anxiety and depression, improves self-esteem and makes us happier. There is a large body of research demonstrating the importance of connection for our mental wellbeing. Book in that cuppa with a friend, volunteer your time to a good cause or just play with your kids with presence (connection building).

So next time you feeling in a low mood or feeling a bit anxious put on your favourite music, go for a run or have a living room dance, dial-up a friend and meet face to face or get out in nature and practice your deep breathing.

I would love to hear what you do to change to stand your state?
