One thing you’ll never hear me say is:
“Just quit your job and follow your purpose.”
At least, not at the beginning of your purpose journey.
This might come as a surprise—especially from someone who helps people uncover their purpose and build more fulfilling and joyful lives. But after almost a decade of guiding incredible humans through midlife transitions, I’ve learned something vital:
Our purpose unfolds best when we feel safe enough to explore our highest excitement.
Quitting your job isn’t always the next best step.
It might be—eventually. But in most cases, I recommend holding onto your job while you begin walking the path of purpose.
Of course, sometimes life makes that decision for us—through redundancy, a health crisis, or a toxic boss. In my case, it was going on maternity leave and
But if you have a choice, I believe in keeping one foot in each world as you build the bridge to something new.
Here’s why.
1. Quitting Can Dysregulate Your Nervous System
Following your purpose requires courage, clarity, and creativity. But none of that is possible when you’re operating in a stress response (a completely different part of the brain).
Walking away from the financial safety of your job without a plan can send your nervous system into overdrive. It might sound romantic to take the leap—but if your body is in panic or overwhelmed, you’ll find it hard to make wise decisions, trust your instincts, or show up in your power.
We need to feel safe to stretch. And purpose work, at its heart, is stretching into new versions of ourselves.
2. Pressure Can Suffocate Your Creativity
When your new venture has to make money from day one, it often can’t breathe.
I’ve seen it so many times: women pour their hearts into something they love—but because they’ve quit their jobs, the financial pressure is intense. That pressure crushes the play, the curiosity, the experimentation that’s essential to finding your way.
Building your purpose from a place of stability gives you space to explore without fear of failure.
3. You Take Yourself With You
It’s tempting to think a new job or business will fix everything—but the truth is, we carry our patterns with us. As the saying by Jon Kabat-Zinn goes “Wherever you go, there you are”.
If you’re trying to escape something—burnout, overworking, people-pleasing—those habits will likely show up again, just in a different setting.
Finding your purpose isn’t about landing the perfect job or launching the perfect business. It’s about discovering alignment within yourself—so you can create more joy, authenticity, and impact in whatever path you choose because you’re finally rooted in who you truly are.
And that unfolding can take some time.
So What Should You Do?
If you’re feeling the nudge toward something new—but you’re not sure where to begin—here’s what I recommend:
Start small. Stay steady.
Take tiny, consistent steps toward what lights you up. That’s what your nervous system can trust. That’s what your future self will thank you for. Consider journaling what lights you up and the first tiny step you could take towards that.
Build while you earn.
Keep your income steady while you explore. Many of my clients have done this—launching a side project, starting a podcast, enrolling in a course—and slowly letting the old job go as the new one takes root.
Make space for experimentation.
If your new thing has to succeed immediately, there’s no room for trial and error or failing forward. But when there’s financial breathing room, you can try, fail, course-correct—and ultimately find your flow.
Start before you're “ready.”
Perfectionism will keep you stuck. You don’t need everything figured out to begin. You just need the courage to take the first tiny step.
Is something stirring in you—but you’re not quite sure what it is, or how to move toward it?
I’m opening up 3 private 1:1 mentoring spots (these places are very limited) for those who are ready to explore what’s next.
