The Cost of Over-Delivering (And What to Do Instead)

Mar 24, 2026

Do you ever wish you could simplify your life?

Do you ever wonder if you might be making things more complex by overdelivering and constantly going above and beyond - in your work, with your friends, or on the domestic front?

I do.

We have this niggly trait in our extended family where we over-deliver a lot - especially around food.

Our partners will often say, “let’s keep it simple and just do takeaways tonight,” and then my Mum will chime in and say, “well I can bring a salad to go with that too”… and next minute we’ve all volunteered to bring something (homemade!), and what was meant to be simple takeaways turns into a fully catered picnic dinner.

Overdelivery in action.

In my work, I see a lot of overdelivery, often driven by the need to overachieve, to make things perfect, or to please others.

It can feel good in the moment to be validated for your efforts or to make other people happy.

But there is a cost.

Whenever you are overdelivering in one area of your life, there is often another area where you are underdelivering.

And over time, this can leave you feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or like you are constantly behind.

In today’s podcast, I talk about the cost of overdelivering and what you can do about it.

And if you’re recognising yourself in this, I also share more about my upcoming Waiheke retreat in May, Slow Unfolding - created for women who are ready to step out of over-delivering, slow down, nourish themselves, and begin to receive.
