3 Rituals for the Summer Solstice

Jun 21, 2023

Summer Solstice Rituals

The summer solstice is the time when we have the most light, energy and abundance. It is a time of celebration, gathering and gratitude

All of the rituals mentioned involve connecting with nature, which is an important aspect of honouring the solstice. Connecting with others is another important aspect of the summer solstice.

1. Herb Gathering

Herbs are beautiful symbols of healing, growth and abundance. Herbs have been used in rituals for many centuries. Through collecting herbs we reconnect with nature and ourselves.

Reflect on the symbolism of the herbs that you have collected. Consider infusing the herbs in bath salts or oils, or making herbal tea. Mindfully receive the healing and purifying elements of the plants as you apply or ingest them.

2. Sunrise Yoga

Take a moment to honour the sun and all the joy and warmth it brings to life. Start the day practising a series of sun salutations while facing the sun (ideally the sunrise).

The salutations are a series of 108 devotional yoga poses to honour the sun. They are a beautiful way to mindfully bring in the summer solstice and feel the energy and vitality of the season. At the start of your practice set an intention for the season or year ahead - this is a powerful time to manifest and create your future.

3. Water Ritual

The summer is a time when we often feel called to be in the refreshing cooling element of water. Water is commonly used in religious or ceremonial activities and is known for cleansing and purifying.

Choose a body of water. It can be the ocean, a river, a waterfall or even a bath or shower. Visualise the water cleansing out any negativity, judgement, criticism or anything that is holding you back.

You may also choose to collect elements from nature (seeds, leaves, petals, stones) to symbolise different aspects of yourself or your life that you want to release. Mindfully and intentionally release these into the water and let them go.

Do you have any solstice rituals you practise in the winter or summer? I would love to hear from you about these. Or if you try one of the above rituals - how was it for you?

Enjoy the long days of summer!
