Her personal interest, reputation, knowledge and experience led her to become a recognised expert on PMS premenstrual syndrome, BPH prostate enlargement and Menopause.

It is with great pleasure I introduce Claudette Wadsworth as the Nourishing Hub Practitioner of the Month….

What is Naturopathy?

CW: Naturopathy is an umbrella term which includes nutrition, herbal medicine, homoeopathy, iridology, detoxification if required, allergy and infection control, healthy lifestyle and stress management protocols, together with referral for comprehensive medical blood tests with your doctor to diagnose and monitor your treatment progress.

Claudette, you have worked as a Naturopath for over 12 years – what inspires you the most about your work?

CW: I love working with women. I find women complex and multi-layered. Women’s physical, emotional and mental states are very intertwined and influenced by their hormones. This depth and complexity inspires me and is so interesting to me.

Speaking to women and understanding this depth helps me to understand myself as a woman and it reminds me to integrate these elements within myself.

In reading about your work there is often reference to ‘empowering women’ – in what ways does your work empower women?

CW: I feel that there is a lot of hormonal conditioning that happens through the traditional medical model. You go to the doctor and are given something to control your hormones. However this practice takes a woman away from being in touch with her own body and she may not be able to connect with what her body is telling her.

There are often a lot of negative thought processes and attitudes around the reproductive system, periods etc. As a practitioner I want to encourage and empower women to connect with their own bodies. Sadly a lot of women have lost confidence in their bodies and I want to help them regain that confidence again and support them through this by providing right supplements, emotional support etc.

“It is my mission to educate, inspire and empower women of all ages to regain their confidence, understanding and control of their own reproductive lives”

You are a recognized expert in your field, particularly for women and men’s hormonal conditions. What are common women’s hormonal issues that you work with?

CW: The most common hormonal conditions I tend to treat are Polycystic Ovaries/Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), PMS, fertility, fibroids, abnormal pap smears, acne, menopause and thyroid imbalances. I also specialise in gender selection, which you can read more about here

You are a specialist in Natural Fertility Management – could you elaborate on your work in this area and how you can help couples struggling to conceive?

CW: I do a lot of testing and work closely with medical doctors during the initial phase. I take a very holistic approach and work through a range of lifestyle factors including the following:

  • Diet (both male and female diet)
  • Lifestyle factors including, stress management, environmental factors, exposure to chemicals, occupation, etc.
  • Hormones – i.e. chart cycles, herbal medicines, hormone testing
  • Prescribing vitamins and herbal medicines
  • Complementary therapies depending on the individual (this may include counselling, acupuncture, theta healing as examples)

Looking through the myriad testimonials from your patients, you have successfully treated people at all ages and stages of life. What is a stand out success story for you?

CW: One couple wanted to conceive but the male had previously had testicular cancer and had one of his testes removed plus chemotherapy to remove the cancer. The couple had been trying to conceive for some time but without any luck. I put them both on a 4 month program and to the surprise of his doctors, the man’s sperm count doubled! The couple went on to successfully conceive their first healthy child.

What do you think are the most common nutritional deficiencies that you see in women (or the supplements you think are most needed by women today)?

CW: Zinc, Iron and Magnesium

Due to the processed foods, our diets are lacking in many minerals. Stress, caffeine, alcohol, sugars all tend to leach or use up our minerals very quickly so I see many women who lack in one or more of these nutrients.

Zinc because it is often not well absorbed in our bodies. Plus our bodies need Zinc for our hormones, skin, immunity etc.

Magnesium – is needed to relax the muscles of the body, help with muscle recovery after exercise and to help stabilize blood sugars so with stress, exercise and the high sugar content in our foods, many women are deficient in this mineral.

Iron – I only prescribe this nutrient if it is needed. If women have heavy periods or do not eat red meat, they can become low in iron.

If you could share some words of wisdom on health and wellbeing to all the women out there, what would you say?

CW: Life is so fast. Time is a one of the biggest commodities nowadays. Therefore we are more stressed, we don’t sleep as much and we don’t eat what we should. There is no time to switch off. We are not getting the downtime that we need and because of this there is no time for our nervous system to relax, our adrenals to reset, our digestive system to work properly and so it goes on. It is about setting boundaries and creating downtime for ourselves.
